AWARDS CRITERIA
All student-athletes that competed in a sport at Sturgeon Composite are eligible for an athletic award if they meet the following requirements. Student-athletes must be in good academic and athletic standing, and must not owe any outstanding fees to be eligible for these awards. Most awards apart from the team awards are selected by the athletic department weeks prior to the awards presentation.
Team Awards
For team members who competed on their respective teams. These awards are selected by each teams coaching staff (ex. MVP, most improved etc).
Athlete of the Year Awards
All grades 11 & 12 male and female athletes are eligible for this award as long as they meet the following requirements:
Minimum of two sports
A person who has contributed to the school through a positive attitude, service, sportsmanship, commitment, leadership, attendance, coachability and academic achievement
Outstanding skills in the sports they compete in
Rookie of the Year Awards
All grade 10 male and female athletes are eligible for this award as long as they meet the following requirements:

A person who has contributed to the school through a positive attitude, service, sportsmanship, commitment, leadership, attendance, coachability and academic achievement
Outstanding skills in the sports they compete in
Sportsperson of the Year Award
This award goes to one male and one female student athlete from grade 10-12. It is awarded to the student athlete who demonstrates a high level of Leadership & Sportsmanship skills and is also involved in the athletic program of the school as a student-athlete
Competes in at least one sport
May not be the most gifted athlete, but one who is committed, responsible, and hard working
An athlete who puts in a lot of volunteer hours into the athletic department
Liked and respected by peers
Enthusiastic and loved to play sports
An athlete who is reliable/responsible on their team, a good role model, and displays good sportsmanship
This award goes to a student-athlete who displays all the qualities that a coach looks for on and off the field. This includes an athlete who plays hard and fair, a good role model, and shows respect for peers, coaches, officials, and the rules of the game.
Coach of the Year Award
This award is given out to honour a coach who has given countless years to the athletic department. This coach exemplifies what it means to help facilitate the growth of an athlete as players and individuals. This award is selected by the athletic department.
Community Enrichment Award
This award is traditionally given to a parent of a student-athlete, or a community coach who is invested in enriching the overall student athlete experience at SCHS. They volunteer countless hours and contribute in so many ways behind the scenes whether it be cooking team meals, transporting athletes to tournaments, helping organize fundraisers, or assisting with banquets and tournament planning, they could even just be a positive influence in the stands.
Ron Allen Scholar Athlete Award
The Scholar Athlete is awarded to a graduating student who holds the highest GPA of all athletes committed to continuing their athletic endeavours at a post-secondary institute. They typically fit all the criteria that has been set forth in all the other major awards. This individual will have gone beyond the call of duty during the past 3 years and has made an outstanding contribution to the Athletic Department on and off the playing field. This award comes with a $500 scholarship courtesy of Ron Allen and his family.
