It is used to move the ball from a position low on the ground to higher up. In a three hit action, it is usually the first.
But now let’s look at how you are supposed to execute the dig. Firstly position your feet shoulder width apart, and for maximum stability, move one foot in front of the other slightly. If you’re wondering which foot is the ‘right’ one to position first, try both and use whichever one feels the most comfortable.
Next, bend your knees. It is important that you give the ball speed using your whole body, not only your arms. Your back should be bent forward and your shoulders closed together, arms outstretched to catch the ball.
Let’s look at the arm position now. The aim is to hit the ball in the area between your wrists and the bend of your arms, for the maximum precision. To ensure this, we must keep the surface of your arms as flat as possible. Position them as shown on the screen, being careful not to bend your elbows at any given moment.
As you reach the ball, you should move under it, bend your knees, and depending on the pre existing force of the ball thrown, give it the desired direction and speed. Naturally, it is going to take a lot of time and practice before your dig is completely reliable, but this goes for all fundamentals as well as most things in life. It requires practice, but with the right arm and leg position, it will be easier to master. Play the video on the left to see a full point being played and notice how the dig is used.
Common mistakes are bending your arms, hitting the ball while you are still in motion, or hitting the ball on the wrong part of your arms, moving it off course. As you can see in the video placed above, the player hit the ball on the outside of her arm, and this steered it off course. The team lost a point due to this mistake.
