By jumping and ‘invading’ the adversary’s space, you can block their attack before it comes to your own side of the field.
You should use the block when defending an attack done by a spike. Don’t use the block when the adversary attacks with a set or a dig as you won’t jump high enough to catch the ball. You can see the block in action by clicking the video on the right.
So how can you do the block? Firstly, position yourself looking at the net. Then, jump with your arms in the air, trying to ‘invade’ the other field without touching the net. The point goes to the other team if you accidentally touch the net or the line underneath the net.
Look at the image on the right, above this text box and notice how the arms of the players doing the wall extend over the level of the net, and almost invade the opposing team's court. How do you think the game will carry on after this photo? Who do you think will score the point?
Common mistakes are the ones cited above plus some others, such as jumping too close or too far away from the net or positioning the hands too far apart, thus letting the ball pass through their gap.
