Hi! I am a DP1 IB student and my name is Sofia. I've played this sport for most of my life - ever since I could walk, my father (a fellow athlete!) taught me the basics. Then when I turned seven, I joined a team, and they have been with me ever since, through losses and wins alike. I have chosen this as my CAS project because I believe my knowledge can help others. I have collaborated with my team to put this site together.
Let me take you through the long journey that volleyball has been for me, throughout my whole life. On the right I am pictured during one of my first mini-volley matches. I was eight or nine at the time, the one looking straight at the camera with the ribbon in my hair. This photo ended up on one of the city's newspapers, and I still treasure a copy of it.
I have had many volleyball coaches during my life, and on the right we are pictured in a team photo with three of them. I was around twelve when this photo was taken, and we had just won second place out of around fifty other teams! It was a very rewarding experience.
Some of my past teammates no longer play with me and we have parted ways, though I still relish the fond memories of our training sessions, matches and locker room jokes. I am the third from the left, and in the photo we were greeting the other team, volleyball style!
In both these photos, we are warming up for a match. As you can see, we are wearing the pre-match shirt and our uniforms are hanging in the background. I can still remember the slight tension, the feeling of anticipation before any important match.
On the left I am warming up my shoulders by spiking.
And this was us a couple of years ago, when we won second place again. I remember the final match very well - the parents and friends in the stands had never been so loud and supportive.
I am the last on the right.
This is us again, last year. More girls joined us this year, but because of the situation, we never took a formal group photo together. You might be wondering why two girls are wearing a different colored jersey. That's because they have a special role on the field, and have to be marked differently for recognition!
Hopefully I have sparked some interest in you with my story, and perhaps now you're intent on joining a team yourself. It's a lot of fun, and I recommend it. I've made many great friends and played challenging and stimulating matches. Now is probably not the time to start playing volleyball in a team because of the situation in the world, but it's never a bad time to watch a past match, play with your brothers and sisters and research about the fascinating world of volleyball.
Thank you for having read through this site, that I have put together thanks to the help of my teammates, my volleyball coach, my family, and my supervisor Miss Magri. Thank you to those people for making this CAS project possible. It has been a long and at times a difficult process, but I've enjoyed it.
And if my teammates and coaches are reading this (and got this far), I'd like to thank you again for all the support and the amazing moments we spent together in the past! Hopefully, we will be back on the court together to train or play competitively again.
You can contact me through my school email, s22sc@edu.iscomo.com, if you find certain parts of the site incorrect or inaccurate, or want to chat about this sport.
I have asked permission to use the images in this site to those pictured. Some photos are old, and I've lost contact with the people involved. If you see yourself in these images and would like to be blurred out, contact me from my school email and I'll be happy to help.
