The first step in figuring out a logo for the team is finding inspiration, and for this i found some CanSat-logos from some previous teams and also grabbed a NASA logo and the android 15 logo. It might be noticeable that there is a bit of a space theme going on with these, which is what i was going for. A thing i noticed about many of the NASA-logos and emblems is that they usually resembled a circle or a square, but with protrusions from the shape , as seen with the NASA-logo and the Cosmic Research logo.
The next step is throwing together a rough mockup using stoch assets and very basic shapes, (and i mean very basic, the red line is obviously only supposed to be above the can on the lower half of it) and then proposing the idea to one other person in the team, Joel. After a bit of back and forth we concluded that this one had a bit too much going on, both color-and shape wise, and also a lot of background space. Not much else to do than look for some more inspiration and try again, while taking these new observations into account.
After getting another scuffed sketch (the black outside of the red circle is not a part of the design, the lowermost n is not supposed to be black, no idea why it changed color when i copied the asset over) together which i proposed to Joel, who approved the idea, so i went ahead and asked all the other team members what they thought of it and if i should move on with this idea.
After getting approval from everyone else i got to work, this is halfway through when i had gotten all the shapes right, besides the lid of the can at the bottom which was a struggle. You may also notice the red outline thing being slightly oddly bent when near the can, which is an unfortunate mistake of the eye, it is very difficult to draw these kinds of shapes without mistake in a pixel-based program such as paint.net, which is my preferred graphic software.
After some polishing up and adding the lid, fixing up the shape of the red outline, adding a gradient there was some back-and-forth on what kind of font we should use for the logo, these being some of the ones that were discussed, however i think we made the right choice when settling for the final design as seen later.
This was the final design that we settled on, big thanks to Roy for figuring out the font!
However, this is a png-file, meaning it is based on pixels and as it turns out, these don't behave very well when made small or very large, as the pixels become very clear to the eye. This is a problem has a solution, namely svg-files, that are not based on pixels, but on geometric shapes that come together to make an image that looks the same, regardless of how much you zoom in or out. Painfully enough, we need this svg-version for our hoodies if we want it to look any good.
There is no way to convert a png to an svg, besides some AI-based conversion tools, but the colors on our logo are far to complex, so off i went to learn a new software tool to recreate the entire logo out of shapes. I'll spare you the details, besides that my back hurt quite a bit after getting this done. This is, the final version, some minor adjustments from the previous due to certain limitations in the software.
