CASP and Challenges

Casp and Challenges

The Massey-Vanier CASP and Challenges programs have an average of ten to fifteen students per year. Two teachers and a Special Education Technician share the four periods each day. Students range in age from eleven to twenty-one years old. To be considered for the CASP or Challenges program, students must be diagnosed with a moderate to severe intellectual impairment or meet the criteria for a derogation. CASP and Challenges students often have inconsistent abilities across the five evaluated competencies of the program. Beyond their academic delays, our students must also learn to navigate their anxiety, social delays, behavioural issues and develop an understanding of the world and community around them. Social-emotional education and overall development are the priority of the program. Students participate in community outings to practice social skills and learn valuable work skills. Students follow a 5-day schedule that consists of classes such as Math, Art, Science, Physical Education and English. They participate in school events and extracurricular activities. Students are also supported by our facility dog, Lily. Lily attends class daily and provides the students with a calming, accepting presence. The CASP and Challenges programs set the building blocks for our students to be meaningful members of our community.
