Purpose of Digital Portfolios and Examples

Many students are creating Google Sites for Digital Portfolios to showcase their digital work. It is a great way for students to be able to have one spot to post their work to and share it with just their teacher, certain people, all of your Domain or even the World.

When you are going to create Digital Portfolios with your students, you should first establish the purpose of the portfolio.

Purpose

  • Demonstrate Learning - students post throughout the year to show how much they are learning (probably only shared with teacher and parents)
  • Demonstrate Mastery - teacher shares standards and students post artifacts to show they meet standards (probably only shared with teacher and parents)
  • Showcase of Published Work - student or teacher choice of what goes on the ePortfolio (can be shared as narrow or wide as you want)

Sharing & Publication Options

Google Sites has a variety of different sharing and publication options based on the purpose of your portfolio. In the sharing settings you can decide if you want your site shared:

  • Walled Garden between you and student
  • Published to the District or Domain
  • Published to a certain group of people - shared by email address
  • Published to the World - anyone with the link can view
  • Sharing Settings Help
  • Site Access Settings

What to include on a Digital Portfolio

It's important to think through what you want on your Digital Portfolio. Here are a few things to put on the front page. Remember, if the Digital Portfolio is shared with the world our outside our domain it should NOT have last name, photo or anything specifically identifying the student.

  • Welcome or Home Page
  • Set up your structure
  • Goals of your Portfolio
  • Contact information, Social Media
  • Recent Updates to your site
  • Artifacts - the items you choose to post on your Digital Portfolio
  • Reflections
