Borrowing procedure

All students may have two items out on loan at any one time, although this can be exceeded in cases of real need. Users may renew or change their books at any time of day during the week.

Students in Years 2 and 3 may borrow two books each week for recreational reading- one book in Spanish and one in English – for a one week period. Books may be renewed, providing no one is waiting to borrow the title.

Students in Years 4 and 10 may borrow two books each week for recreational reading- one book in English and one in Spanish – for a one week period. Books may be renewed, providing no one is waiting to borrow the title.

Students in Years 11-13 may have five items out on loan at any one time. Books must be returned or renewed after two weeks.

Reference books may not be borrowed to take home. They may be checked out to be used in the classroom, but must be returned by the end of the school day.

To check out of book, the Librarian stamps the date-due card in the book and the borrowing card. The borrowing card is kept in the student´s Library pocket.

During each Secondary class, the Librarian should check that all students have brought their books to class, whether or not the books were due. A record should be kept of students who failed to do so in a Detentions Notebook to keep track of students who consistently forget to bring their books class.

Lost books

The Library should be notified immediately if a book is lost. The Librarian then sends a letter home (see Appendix II), notifying the student´s parents that the lost book must be replaced with the same title,  or paid for, in order for the student to regain his/her borrowing privileges. Replacement copies must be new or in perfect in condition ; the fee for lost books is $300. The Librarian should keep a careful record of the student payments, and all money collected must be used to purchase new books for the Library. Users should be warned that once a lost book is paid for, the money will not be refunded, even if the book is found at a later date. Final report cards will not be given out until lost Library books have been replaced or paid for. If any reason, a student receives his final report without having cleared his/her debt with the Library, he/she will not be allowed to borrow any books the following school term

Damaged books

If a book is damaged beyond repair, the student pays for a new one, or replaces it with the same title. A letter (see Appendix II) is sent home to notify parents, and the student loses his borrowing privileges until the item has been replaced or paid for.

Teacher loans

Teachers are allowed to have up to ten items out on loan at any time. The borrowing procedure is the same as for students, and the teachers are expected to renew their books if they require them after the due date. At the end of each term, the Librarian send reminders to all staff who owe books (see Appendix II).

In addition to the items they borrow for their personal use, Primary teachers often ask to borrow Library books to have in their classroom for recreational reading during the term. In this case, they may borrow up to 24 books.  However, the teachers are responsible for the books they have borrowed for their classrooms and are expected to replace or pay for lost or damage books. This should be clarified at the beginning of each term, as teachers tend to think that this service is “free”.
