Welcome

This interactive resource aims to support primary teachers in using digital portfolios to embed formative assessment in their practice. The sections in the menu above outline how to successfully implement and embed digital portfolios with your pupils.

What is a digital portfolio?

Digital portfolios are "...student-owned dynamic digital workspaces wherein students can capture their learning and their ideas, access their collections of work, reflect on their learning, share it, set goals, seek feedback and showcase their learning and achievements."

(NCCA, 2013)

What are the components of a Digital Portfolio?

There are three components to a Digital Portfolio - storage, workspace and showcase.

Component 1 - Storage: Pupils can use their Digital Portfolio space as digital storage, where they create and collect work samples.

Component 2 - Workspace: In the workspace, pupils can plan, set goals, organise learning experiences chronologically, collaborate with peers and reflect on their own learning process and on the work of their peers.

Component 3 - Showcase: The showcase component of a Digital Portfolio can be used to demonstrate a pupil's competences, achievements and products.

For more information on each of these components and practical guidance on embedding digital portfolios with your pupils, you can access the EUfolio: ePortfolio Implementation Guide for Policymakers and Practitioners.

This video explains these three components, outlines the type of work samples that a Digital Portfolio may contain and provides two examples of showcase portfolios.

Primary Curriculum Framework

At the primary level, Being a Digital Learner is one of the seven key competencies integrated across all curriculum areas and subjects from Junior Infants to Sixth Class through the learning outcomes.

This competency empowers children to become curious, creative, confident, and critical users of digital technology.

The Being a Digital Learner competency also enriches digital portfolios, allowing learners to creatively, collaboratively, and critically showcase their work and contributions.

All other six key competencies can equally be enhanced through the use of Digital Portfolios.
