Potential inductees of National Honor Society must show that they are exemplary in the 4 pillars of NHS: Character, Scholarship, Leadership, and Character.
At Edison High School students are typically inducted during their junior year by meeting the requirements set forth in our bylaws. Seniors may be inducted if they meet the requirements during their senior year. Freshman and Sophomore students who have at least a 3.5 GPA will be notified in the spring of each year and informed and reminded of the requirements for membership.
To become a member of the EHS chapter of NHS, students must maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 3.750 on the 4.0 scale.
During the fall of Junior year, all potential inductees who have met this requirement will be invited to receive more information about NHS. If a students fails to meet this requirement junior year, they will be reevaluated in the fall of senior year and can still be inducted as a senior.
Edison High School encourages students to get involved and understands that not all students can hold officer positions in all clubs. We also believe that leadership can come from working with other people in a variety of activities and by going over and above in your school activities.
To meet the requirement for leadership, all potential inductees will fill out a leadership form where they can indicate the activities they have been involved in both in and out of school. Activities are awarded points based on the amount of time, level of commitment, teamwork required and amount leadership that needs to be shown in that activity. A total of 35 points must be earned for membership.
A student who fails to meet the 35 point limit will have the option of providing additional information that may allow them to still be inducted.
Students are expected to earn service hours through volunteer work in the school and community. As potential inductees, students must submit a minimum of 15 hours of service by the end of the 1st semester of their junior year. This service can be completed at any point between summer before freshman year and end of the 1st semester of junior year. A form must be signed by an adult who can verify the service and submitted to the chapter advisor.
Each potential inductee will be evaluated by the staff of Edison High School on their character. Students who have high moral character and have shown this through their actions while at Edison High School will meet the requirement of character.
