Reading
In this unit, students will read firsthand accounts of writers’ interactions with nature and novel excerpts in which characters encounter nature. They will synthesize information to build the following Enduring Understandings:
Knowledge of the natural world is based on observation and inquiry.
Plants and animals, including humans, interact with and depend upon each other and their environment.
Interactions with the natural world bring up strong feelings and emotions in people.
Nature’s beauty and encounters with nature are recurring themes in literature. Characters reveal themselves through their responses to nature.
Writing
Students will be writing a Informative/Explanatory essay. They will learn the different components of an Informative/Explanatory Essay like writing an introduction, providing relevant facts and details, grouping similar information together in paragraphs, and writing a conclusion that leaves the reading thinking! The prompt for their essay is describing the appearance and behavior of chipmunks.
