Supporting Students with Dyslexia

Edina Public Schools does not formally diagnose dyslexia. However, EPS does actively monitor student performance and screen for reading concerns that would indicate a need for supplemental instruction, alternative learning methods, or specialized instructional services. District Literacy Coaches support the tier 1 intervention plan process with classroom teachers. Parents/guardians of students diagnosed with dyslexia by an outside source should make the classroom teacher aware of the diagnosis and share any additional information they think would be helpful, including, but not limited to the outside evaluator’s summary and recommendations.

The classroom teacher then brings this information to the attention of the building’s Student Support Team for consideration. The team investigates the extent to which the diagnosed disability of dyslexia affects the student’s performance in the area of reading and determines the next steps. Outcomes of the Student Support Team meeting may include: additional evaluation, implementation of classroom accommodations, inclusion in one or more of the interventions available at the site, or determination that no additional services are required. The Student Support Team consults with parents/guardians regarding recommendations before next steps are taken in supporting the student.

This chart, above, briefly illustrates the Problem Solving Process utilized by school teams to determine how best to support students.
