Counseling Tips

Working from home has been a little trying for all of us. Remember to focus on the things that you have control over and try to let go of the things that you do not. We are all in this together, so please reach out if you need help with anything. My email is trutland@edgefield.k12.sc.us. I will do anything I can to help make this process easier on all of us.

I don't know about you, but my dog Cooper is loving all of the attention he is getting these days. Hug your family and your pets. I can't wait to see all of you soon.

Studying at Home

  • Remember that you have access to your teachers. Don't feel like you have to struggle alone. Call or email them for help.

  • Do the best you can! We are all in this together.

  • Don't stress. Do what you can and seek help for the rest.

  • Remember that your school work is important during this time. Be sure to get completed assignments returned to teachers.

  • Enjoy your spring break! We all need a rest after the stress of the last few weeks.

A Positive Mindset

  • A positive mindset can go a long way toward helping us make it through these challenging times:

    • Say "I can" instead of "I can't"

    • Smile - even when you don't want to

    • Be optimistic

    • Remember that you are in charge of how you feel

    • Be thankful

    • Be nice

  • Stress is a normal part of life and can actually help us learn and grow. Stress becomes a problem when we don't have the skills to manage it.

  • Ways to manage stress in middle school:

    • Don't over schedule! Middle school students need downtime to decompress and relax.

    • Get enough sleep. This should be quality sleep without the interruption of a cell phone or other device.

    • Eat a healthy diet.

    • Exercise.

    • Talk to someone - a friend, family member, or a counselor - when you are feeling overwhelmed.

Learning how you study best now will pay off down the road in high school and college!
