ACE Electives

The ACE program at Melrose High School delivers an enrichment program to students who have a passion for a particular subject.  ACE Electives are available to students in Year 9 & 10.   Application to these classes is separate to the Web Preferences selection form.  Students wishing to undertake ACE elective units will need to complete the ACE application form emailed to them in Term 4, Week 4 or Term 2, Week 4.   Information will also be included in the Daily Announcements and be displayed on the internal electronic notice boards.

ACE Dance

ACE Dance focuses on increasing students' understanding of all performance aspects. Technique, choreography and performance skills will be developed in this course through both class and community events and performances during the semester. Students will have various performance and leadership opportunities to demonstrate the skills that they develop through this course.  Students also participate in workshops run by community professionals to challenge their technique across various genres.

ACE Drama

ACE Drama is open to students in year 9 and 10 over two semesters. Students hoping to be selected in the class will submit an application form and take part in a short audition. The auditions are held in term four for students in years eight and nine through the medium of a short monologue or duologue.

In Semester One students will be introduced to the theories of prominent dramatic theorists; Laban (movement), Stanislavski (Realism) and the stock characters of Commedia Dell Arte. Semester Two is primarily  focused on the production and performance of a major play for a public audience. Learning lines, character development and analysis of the script are major components of the course. Recent performances include ‘Steel Magnolias’, ‘Cosi’, ‘The Crucible’, ‘The Real Inspector Hound’, ‘Major Payne’ ‘Ten Ways to Survive the Zombie Apocalypse’ and ‘The Breakfast Club.’

ACE Design Workshop

The Academic Curriculum Extension (ACE) course in Design Workshop is a selective program open to students with a proven technical workshop ability and passion for product design and development in wood, metal and/or new technologies. Participation in this program will provide an opportunity for the development of skills through product development and design using marketing and business models. Dependent on staffing, this course offers the opportunity to undertake up to three VET competencies from the Certificate 1 in Furnishing.

This course will be run as a rigorous industry focused unit that prepares students for real work problem solving, collaborative work skill development and critical thinking. Students will develop not only their technical construction skills in various materials, but also their skills in orthographic design skills and Computer Aided Design. Students will have the opportunity to pursue their individual interests in workshop construction and design.

ACE Music

The ACE Music class is recommended for those students who have studied music electives in years 7 and 8, and/or those who have some significant prior experience on an instrument and a good understanding of basic music theory. The course follows the same format as the other music electives, which includes practical work on an instrument of your choice, a music genre study, composition and theory, but these aspects will be studied in more depth in the ACE class. There are also units of work studied that are not offered to the other music elective classes, for example Jazz and Contemporary Music units. Students in the ACE class would also be expected to take advantage of the opportunities that will be offered to perform outside the classroom setting.

ACE Visual Arts

The Academic Curricula Extension (ACE) course in Visual Art is a selective program open to students with a natural creative artistic ability. Participation in this program will provide an opportunity for the development of skills through a mix of visual enquiry, studio work, exhibition and critical reflection. Students will interact with new mediums and technologies and have the opportunity to exhibit their own work. Students will look at the various approaches artists have taken throughout art history to enhance their own practice. Emphasis will be on the development of their ideas through their Visual Arts Process Diary using the Solution Fluency process to research their ideas to gain a stronger understanding of their concepts and to extend their Visual Literacy. Entry to this course is via portfolio application per semester.
