Unit Description, Unit Specific Goals and Content Descriptions

Please examine the Content Descriptions in Beginning Languages- The Changing World.

The Unit description, Unit Specific Goals and Content Descriptions describe the student's learning entitlement. Through the course of the unit, students should engage with learning activities  related to all of the Content Descriptions.

The level of engagement with the Content Description is indicated by the verb at the opening of the Content Description.

Teachers will illuminate or exemplify the Content Descriptions by choosing texts, contexts, case-studies etc. and explaining the links in their Program of Learning.

Activity 1.1

Take these three Content Descriptions from Beginning Languages- The Changing World.

Critically analyse a variety of increasingly complex texts that explore change and the issues that impact our world, such as social, historical, political, environmental, technological and economic challenges and opportunities

Evaluate how customs and traditions, including language, may vary within a culture, as well as between cultures, and across time

Communicate ideas, concepts and opinions related to the changing world such as challenges and opportunities to share responsibilities

General Capabilities

The course developers have attempted to integrate the General Capability with Content Descriptions where ever possible. Consider the opportunities to develop General Capabilities when teaching to the Content Descriptions.

Teachers are encouraged to:

• model the general capabilities within a variety of contexts

• identify connections between the learning area/subject and the general capabilities

• provide a variety of learning activities that support development of the general capabilities

• provide opportunities for students to practise the general capabilities as authentic elements of the learning area/subject

• provide feedback to students about their progress toward developing the general capabilities.

Cross-curriculum Priorities

The course developers have attempted to integrate the Cross-Curriculum Priorities with Content Descriptions and scope and sequences where ever possible. Consider the opportunities to develop Cross-Curriculum Priorities when teaching to the Content Descriptions.

Activity 1.2

Review one of your own units of work, or Program of Learning, for your Languages subject.

Consider how is it meeting the Content Descriptions, Achievement Standards, General Capabilities and Cross Curriculum Priorities? Do any changes need to be made?

Write a paragraph on any changes you will make, or reasons why it is aligned.

Levels of Thinking

Read these two webpages on levels of thinking by Vanderbilt University and the University of Wollongong.

Activity 1.3

Consider the extracts from in-class writing from EALD. (EALD used so all can read it) Examples one and two are from a beginning level. Examples three and four are from a Continuing level, and five from Advanced. Students had been studying these topics, but the actual questions were unseen, but predictable.

Please them in a rank order of levels of thinking and linguistic standard and apply a grade.

Consider what would you have to include in the teaching of the unit to get students to the highest possible levels of thinking specified in the Content Descriptions and the Achievement Standards?

Samples taken from   Government of Alberta, "Writing Samples" Supporting English Language Learners, Government of Alberta, Canada, https://www.learnalberta.ca/content/eslapb/writing_samples.html

Example One

Do you think it is important for people to continue to travel into space? Why or why not? You may want to think about issues, such as:

Last century people countrees raced to space. Today we still are flying to space. But the planes (rockits) cost, are expensive, and sometimes the pilots are danger. Astroids could get in the path of the rockit. If the rockit doesn’t work the pilots could die. But when the rockit works the pilots and their countree gets rewards. We need to explor space for scientist Science.

Example Two

Do you think it is important for people to continue to travel into space? Why or why not? You may want to think about issues, such as:

Intro - I think it is really important for people to continue to travel into space because those people are brave and adventurous and can learn more about other’s planets that live in space.

Many space exploration can be dangerous: mystery or see something wrongly. That can give me many methods to stand it.

If someone learns the methods, that is real rewards of dangers. Like something wrong around of own planet and they can tell us. Everything can happen there. The costs might be so expense because all travel included. If you have the money and know the dangers that involve going into space, there should be anything stopping you. There are many space where we can travel or exploration. It is something new and we can learn about that is we didn’t know before.

Conclusion: In my conclusion, I think space is not an easy place to go and is expensive to go. The costs might be high so hard work for check there staff and fix it, if there are problems. The bravery, rewards and great experience of wanting to find more info about what is outside the earth why not continue if that day is good to go into space to do what you love go to space.

Example Three

Global warming has become a serious threat to our planet.  Explain what we can do as citizens to reduce the effects of global warming. You may want to consider factors, such as:

In the last years we are facing a really big problem called “Global Warming” because the humanity was not so carefull with the planet Earth. Global warming has many bad effects and it always an international environment problem that people want to solve. With the growing of earth population, global warming has become serious than ever. The citizens can reduce the effects of global warming if they recycle the material products like paper, glass, etc.

If we will recycle the rubbish more than ever before we will get a better future. I could do many things like recycling. At home I will seperate the trash into many categories. For example, papers, bottles, and garbages. So many people do not recycle or just through the rubbish in the nature. Papers could reuse after the process of paper factories, bottles could reuse after the process of factories too. It might save a lot of materials like woods and plastics.

Also, the northpole melt away not completely but pieces of it. There are not just the icebears who need a place to life we also need a clean and nice place to life. Also, the Earth is very poluted because of the impact of fossil fuels like oil, gas and coal. On the other hand, I could ride my bicycle instead of taking car. If many people ride the bike instead of drive themselves, the C02 emessions might desend. Another things should be aware of are the fossil fuels, it will become empty some day if we don’t find the substitute energy. Most of the people become really comfortable and (they forget to use the bikes) not careful with the environment. They forget the oxygen is an important resource for life and they continue to cut the forests. We However, these things have an influence on us. When the oil get fewer, the price get higher. Customers might to pay more on many things and some people might not afford it. We all need to be better friends to our world and nature.

We should start to pay more attention to the Earth needs if we want to live in a safe-way. To sum up, helping reduce the effects of global warming is not only good for yourself but the every one and our home planet Earth.

Example Four

Have you ever wondered about your place in the world?  Do you sometimes dream of where you want to be in life? When you find your place, will you know it? Write about where you would like your life to lead you.

Life is harder when you have choices. My culture believes that parents choose your path in life. Back in home my friends and I talked around what our parents wanted for us and worked carefully to get those goals. Then we moved here and I find myself in a culture where the children have to say about what they want to do. Ever since I’ve begun to think I might have to say about what I want in the world I’ve been so unhappy.

My father is engineer. He has provided a great deal of daily things for us and given us many opportunities. My mother is engineer too. Genetically I should be top in math but there is no proof of that. I spend hours struggling with numbers and both of my parents work explaining them at me over and over. At first I thought it was because my English was poor but I’ve been here six years now and that isn’t it. I just don’t get the numbers. Despite this difficulty my parents’ wishes for me are set. I have to be engineer.

In my high school they provide lots of career information and recommend choosing a career based on interests and talents. At first, I was at a lost for what might even interest me but over the months I have begun recognize that I enjoy helping people. I counsel all of my friends and read many books on philosophy, new age perspectives, and psychology. I brought these interests to my parents...once. It didn’t go well.

How do I join my new need for having some say about what I want to pursue in life with the traditional expectations to obediently follow the wishes of my parents? I have watched my friends as they choose one path over the other. Some of them choose the path that their parents want. And others choose the path they want and their parents reluctantly agree to allow their children to explore “other possibilities.” Somebody is going to be unhappy. I struggle with this dilemma, and often dream about my dreams.

I day dreams about this dangerous journey of life as I go to counsellor’s office to get a registration form for summer school so that I can improve my mathematics mark and successfully apply to the engineering at university.

Example Five

It is a common theme in literature that the worst of times brings out not only the worst but also the best in people. Individuals faced with natural disasters, conflicts, overwhelming odds, unbearable pressure and monstrous evil are capable of extraordinary acts of courage and kindness.  Who do you think is truly courageous?  Why?

I come from country that has been involved in conflict for decades, in fact, hundreds of years. The country has had worst of times many years. If you count the years it would lead you to pessimistic view about the past and loss of hope for the future. The individuals what have acted with evil meanness for the citizens of my country are enemies from inside the country and there are some enemies from outside the country. Nothing can crush the strong spirit of my people, particularly women, and most specifically my hero Dr. X.

When I lived back home there was conflict between different groups of ethnic minorities. The group who was persecuted the most were _____ (tribe). Moreover, females in our conservative society were _____ considered second class. Dr. X was born a female _____ (tribe). She was condemned two times. But she became first _____ (tribe) woman to get a degree in medicine. She practiced medicine in capital city but was forced to run away for her safety. The country was invaded by a super power. Her husband was arrested and never seen again. Dr. X and her children fled to another country. In this new country she opened a clinic to help refugees who lived in terrible misery, particularly women. People in home country fought back against foreign occupation for years, however once invaders left, a radical extremist group took power of the country. Dr. X had been gone a decade.

Once the radical extremists had been overthrown an interim government was set up. Dr. X returned from her place of safety to take cabinet post in an Interim Administration. She worked towards making things better for women. She was forced to resign because she was threatened with death and harassed for challenging _____ (tribe) Law. The conservatives called her a criminal in our country.

Dr. X is not only my hero but she is recognized internationally for her courage and commitment. She has received many awards for her work with the human rights and democracy. A few years ago, she received a very prestigious international award. I can only hope to face adversity with bravery she has shown during her life. I follow her life and her work because it is inspiration for me when I read about darkness disasters across the world.
