Checklisting is a more definite version of the Fist of Five/ABCD/Thumbs/... formative data collection tool. While these tools provide a snapshot of your student's understanding, it doesn't produce written data you can evaluate later.

Checklisting can easily become a normal classroom task, where students know it is coming and trust it will be used to help drive their learning. It can be as simple as a 1-5 scale students mark their confidence on or check smile and frown emojis to describe their comfort with an idea or topic. You can use this to track individual students, or you can use the group data to help identify which topics need reteaching.
