The SPA instrumental music program seeks to develop musical competency through the concepts of rhythm, melody, harmony, form, and expression. Students will participate in various performances and group activities throughout the year.
Instrumental music is a full-year course (5* credits for Instrumental Music 10/20/30). Instrumental Music 30 may be used to apply to post-secondary.
Junior Band (Gr. 9-10) is aimed at helping students develop the fundamentals of their instruments.
This is an opportunity for students to have more one-on-one feedback and focus on improving their skills.
Senior Band (Gr. 9-12) is geared towards more challenging (but fun!) music that pushes students to learn more advanced musical concepts.
Students in this band will participate in the Alberta Band Festival.
Jazz Band (Gr.9-12) is an after-school course (3* credits) where students learn exciting music styles such as rock, blues, and latin.
Beginner or Advanced Band are corequisite with Jazz Band.
Students' previous band teachers will recommend which band (junior or senior) they will be put in for their first year.
All band students are welcome to join jazz band, as long as they show they are ready to work hard and have fun!
BAND CAMP
Students get to spend a day at Camp Nakamun learning with professional musicians, enjoying time together away from school, and participating in group activities throughout the day.
Band camp is a must-have!
COMMUNITY
Community is a valued part of the music program at SPA. Beyond learning music, music students at SPA have the opportunity to join a welcoming community of peers they can learn from.
Students also have the optional opportunity to join pep band, where they get to perform fun and exciting tunes alongside the SPA sports teams.
