In Social Studies, students acquire the knowledge, skills and positive attitudes needed to be responsible citizens and contributing members of society. The content of social studies draws from disciplines of history, geography, economics, social sciences, behavioural sciences, and humanities. Students must obtain a minimum of 15 credits in Social Studies, five of which must be at the 30-level, to fulfill the requirements for a high school diploma.
SOCIAL STUDIES 10-1 (Recommended Prerequisite: 65% or higher in Social Studies 9. Students with a grade below 60% in Social Studies 9 will be enrolled in Social Studies 10-2.) Students will examine the relationships between globalization, citizenship, and identity to enhance skills for citizenship in a globalizing world. The infusion of multiple perspectives will allow students to explore the effects of globalization on peoples in Canada and throughout the world, including the impact on Indigenous and Francophone communities.
SOCIAL STUDIES 10-2 (Recommended Prerequisite: 50- 64% in Social Studies 9) Students will learn how Canada developed as a nation, understand its’ role in the world community, and examine how globalization and other forces shape Canada’s unique identity. Students will gain an understanding of the rights and responsibilities of citizenship and the knowledge and skills necessary for participation in the Canadian political process and society.
SOCIAL STUDIES 20-1 (Recommended Prerequisite: 65% or higher in Social Studies 10-1. Students with a grade lower than 60% in Social Studies 10-1 will be enrolled in Social 20-2.) Students will explore and analyze historical and contemporary understandings of nationalism in Canadian and international contexts. Students will examine the impact of nationalism on individuals and communities in Canada and around the world, encouraging students to develop personal and civic responses to emergent issues related to nationalism. Students will critically analyze history from the French Revolution, through to the 20th century and events in the world today, to determine the extent to which we should embrace nationalism.
SOCIAL STUDIES 20-2 (Prerequisite: 50% in Social Studies 10-2) The Social Studies 20-2 program is designed to help students understand how important changes in European society since the French Revolution have shaped the modern world and how nationalism continues to influence contemporary issues and society.
SOCIAL STUDIES 30-1 (Recommended Prerequisite: 65% or higher in Social Studies 20-1. Students with a grade below 60% in Social Studies 20-1 will be enrolled in Social Studies 30-2.) Students will explore the origins and complexities of ideologies, examine multiple perspectives of classical and modern liberalism through study of political and economic systems in the context of historical events since the World Wars. Developing a comprehensive understanding of the evolution of modern liberal thought and competing ideologies will help students to become active, informed, and responsible citizens.
SOCIAL STUDIES 30-2 (Prerequisite: 50% or better in Social Studies 20-2) Students will explore the origins and complexities of liberalism and competing ideologies, and major political and economic systems in the context of historical events since the World Wars. Students will acquire the knowledge and understanding to become active, informed and responsible citizens.
