Becoming a Dog-Friendly Classroom
Teachers interested in having Lily visit their classroom must complete a certification process to ensure a safe and positive experience for all students. This begins with reviewing the program with students and parents. Teachers will send an introductory letter to families, present a student slideshow about the therapy dog program, and have students read and sign the "ROAR" promise. It's essential that all students understand that interacting with Lily is completely voluntary—no one will be required to approach or touch the dog.
Teacher Preparation and Safety
Before Lily can visit a classroom, teachers must consult with the school nurse to identify any student allergies and determine their severity. Classrooms with severe allergies cannot host therapy dog visits. Teachers are also responsible for inspecting the area where Lily will be present and removing any potentially harmful items such as chocolate, grapes, raisins, and other toxic substances. To request a classroom visit, staff should contact their building principal by email.
Certification
Once teachers have completed the preparation steps, they will read and sign the staff agreement for a Dog-Friendly Classroom. Upon completion, they'll receive a certification badge to post on or next to their classroom door, indicating that their room is ready to welcome Lily for visits.
