About Resa Eckhart, LMFT

The first thing you need to know about me is that I am an imperfect person striving to be the best wife, mother, and therapist I can be every day. I consider it an honor to come alongside people who are hurting and help them in their journey toward healing. I don't take this task lightly. I'm humbled that you might choose me to help you learn to live a healthier, richer, more fulfilling life.

I grew up in central Iowa and obtained my Bachelor's Degree in psychology at Iowa State University. I attended graduate school at Indiana Wesleyan University, where I earned my Master's Degree in Counseling (with a specialization in Marriage and Family Therapy). I have worked in both collegiate and private practice settings.

In graduate school, I specialized in Marriage and Family Therapy, which focuses on how relationships influence one’s ability to function individually and vice versa. I do individual, premarital, marital and family therapy and have experience working with depression, anxiety, grief/loss, trauma/PTSD, life cycle issues, transition issues, personality patterns and disorders, and relational distress. With individuals, I use the clinical approach(es) that is(are) most appropriate given the presenting concern. I believe that addressing a client’s emotional experience is vital in the therapeutic process. I also believe the therapeutic relationship is a key factor in the success of therapy, so I strive to connect with each client with whom I work.

I use Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) with couples, an empirically proven approach that helps couples change their interactional pattern from one of anger, criticism and distance to one of emotional safety, closeness, and connection. I have advanced training in this model.

I am a Christian. What that means to me is that I have a relationship with Jesus in which I know that I am loved beyond measure. I trust His will for my life. If it's important to you to incorporate your faith into therapy, we can do that. If you don't want to, we won't. I think it's important, though, that you know my worldview is formed by my faith.

I am a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and a Clinical Fellow in the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy.
