The High School chorus is a mixed ensemble of singers SATB, from 8th grade through senior year. We perform two concerts a year, one in December and the other in May. Students also perform for Founder's Day. Arriving on time, having their materials and participating to the best of their abilities are the requirements for participation within the ensemble. Students sign-up to sing. The expectation is that people want to be here and put their best, most positive efforts into class. Sound files are available for High School Singers to practice independently at home. The expectation is that singers will establish practicing habits that include twenty minutes three times a week outside of class to ensure independence and mastery. Check-ins will be a part of the curriculum and a student will be assessed individually on their weekly progress. We meet twice a week and grading is credit/no credit. Attendance at all three performances is mandatory for a passing grade.
Our students perform in a variety of concerts throughout the year--from the Holiday Concert, featuring all of our large ensembles, to the more intimate Chamber Music, Percussion, Opera, and Jazz Concerts. Students also have the opportunity to attend performances by well-known visiting guest artists such as Wynton Marsalis, Maria Schneider, and Milt Hinton; travel to jazz festivals; and participate in the NYSSMA solo and ensemble festivals. Students may choose from a wide range of course offerings, including Digital Music, Music Theory, and Composition, or participate in interdisciplinary courses in conjunction with the history department such as City Semester and LP: 12 Albums That Changed the World. Our ensembles in the upper school are Chorus, Opera Company, Vocal Jazz Ensemble, Percussion Ensemble, Studio Ensemble, Chamber Music, String Orchestra, Jazz Improvisation, Jazz Ensemble, and Concert Jazz.
