1. Overview

This document outlines the terms and conditions for participation in The Microalgae Project (“the Project”), operated by East Coast Algae (“we”, “us”, “our”). By engaging with this Project, schools, teachers ("you), and students agree to the following terms.

2. Eligibility

• Open to Australian schools (Years K–12) and education centres.

• Participation must be coordinated by a registered teacher or school representative.

• Students under 18 must have parental or guardian consent.

3. Sample Collection

• Sample collection is low risk but must be supervised.

• Avoid hazardous, contaminated, or restricted areas.

• Follow all instructions in the training video and kit.

• Supervisors are responsible for conducting a safety hazard assessment when undergoing field work for the project.

• We are not liable for any injury or incident during sample collection.

4. Kit Use and Return

• Kits include sample vials, collection tools, data sheets, and a prepaid return postal sleeve.

• Return kits promptly after collection - ideally the same day.

• Late returns may affect sample quality but will still be processed where possible.

• Instructions for kit use are expected to be followed.

• Kit must be returned to East Coast Algae via post within two months of initial purchase of the kit.

5. Sample Processing and Deliverables

• Samples are analysed in our lab.

• You’ll receive access to a digital library containing:

  • Images and video showcasing microalgae in your samples.

  • One poster showcasing species of microalgae found in your samples.

6. No Microalgae Found

• If no microalgae is detected, we will contact you.

• Any solution offered will be at the discretion of East Coast Algae and assessed on a case-by-case basis.

• East Coast Algae is not responsible for any poor samples.

7. Turnaround Time

• Estimated timeline: 4 weeks from receiving your samples to final delivery of digital library.

8. Intellectual Property

• All images, videos, and reports remain the property of East Coast Algae. Ownership will be indicated via watermark, name or signature on all digital products.

• Materials may be used for educational purposes only.

• Commercial use or redistribution is prohibited without written permission.

• Any material that undergoes educational use, commercial use or redistribution must contain any name, signature or watermark initially provided by East Coast Algae.

9. Privacy and Data Use

• Student information is not collected.

• Any personal data collected is not shared publicly.

• Anonymous images or reports may be used for promotional or educational purposes unless you opt out by contacting us.

• All data handling complies with the Australian Privacy Principles (APPs).

10. Payment and Refunds

• Payment is required before kits are dispatched.

• Refunds are not available once kits are shipped, except in cases of error or cancellation prior to dispatch.

• Additional services require separate invoicing and payment.

11. School Responsibilities

• Ensure students follow safety guidelines.

• Submit the kit correctly and on time.

• Communicate any issues or delays promptly.

12. Liability

• East Coast Algae is not liable for:

  • Injuries during sample collection

  • Lost or damaged kits during transit

  • Delays caused by postal services or school scheduling
