CLASSROOM RULES AND EXPECTATION GUIDE 2025-2026
Rules and expectations are needed to ensure that the classroom stays orderly and chaos free, so that all students can learn and do their best. As a parent or guardian, you are entrusting me with your child to provide a safe and enriching environment, both physically and emotionally. Eighth graders are not little kids, and most desire to be treated as young adults. I will strive to always treat your child with dignity and respect. Over the years, I have found the following policies work well in keeping a structured classroom and helping students prepare for high school and beyond. The following rules must be adhered to at all times:
The first and most important rule in my classroom is NO talking when the teacher is talking. When I am talking, I am giving instructions on how to do assignments or giving information that is important for all students.
Enter the classroom in a QUIET and ORDERLY FASHION. Begin working immediately on the day's warm up assignment (bell ringer), which will be posted on the board.
Respect and listen to the teacher and your classmates. My classroom WILL maintain an atmosphere for learning. It will NOT be a place for bullying or disruptions.
Exiting the classroom—-Students are to pack up their belongings only when instructed by the teacher. Students must remain at their stations until instructed to exit the classroom, which will be done in an ORDERLY FASHION.
BATHROOM POLICY
Leaving Class/Restroom Breaks— I adhere to a strict NO BATHROOM BREAK POLICY. Students will NOT be allowed to go to the restroom unless a student has a DIRE EMERGENCY, OR HAS A PHYSICIAN'S EXCUSE. A copy of the Physician’s Excuse should be filed with the front office AND a copy given to me. In middle school, when one student is allowed to go to the restroom, then they ALL want to go to the restroom. Our classroom is located on the opposite end of school, very far from the nearest restroom. Everyday, students have many opportunities to go to the restroom such as: 1)before school starts, 2)between classes, 3)gym class, 4)at lunch,5) when they attend classes that are closer to the restrooms, or 6)on the way to the busses/carpool.
HAIR AND SKIN PRODUCTS
My classroom WILL NOT be used as a salon. Please keep your combs, brushes, lipstick/lip gloss, lotions, gels and other similar items in your booksack or purse. APPLYING SCENTED LOTIONS OR SPRAYING PERFUME OR OTHER SCENTED AEROSOLES IN MY CLASSROOM IS STRICTLY PROHIBITED. Some students are HIGHLY allergic to chemical fragrances found in sprays and lotions. Using these items could cause these students to have serious medical issues which could affect their breathing. ANY USE OF SPRAYS, LOTIONS, OR OTHER PRODUCTS SIMILAR TO THESE IN MY CLASSROOM WILL RESULT IN AN AUTOMATIC REFERRAL AND A PHONE CALL HOME.
LABS
During group or lab work, all students are expected to work as a team, do their fair share of work, and resolve issues not as little kids, but as young adults. All lab safety rules shall be followed by students during lab time. Horseplay or not following the teacher’s directions will result in an infraction, consequence, or being prohibited from participating in any future labs. If a student is not allowed to participate in labs due to behavior problems, that student will receive an alternative assignment.
MISSED ASSIGNMENTS/ABSENCES
It is imperative that students understand that ALL work assigned to students must be completed, even if a student has an excused absence. Many 8th grade students will miss school due to performances, sports, ambassadorships and high school visits, especially in the spring. All of these activities are “excused absences”, which means just that—the absence is excused. All assignments must be completed and students will follow the rule for missed work found in the class syllabus.
I look forward to working with students and parents/guardians to ensure their 8th grade year at MMAM is an enjoyable and memorable experience.
