Welcome to Middle School STEM! STEM is an acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. This is the first year that GOMHS is adding LSU STEM PATHWAYS Courses to High School (I teach Introduction to Engineering and Cybersecurity) and CODING, ROBOTICS, and ENGINEERING to Middle School. Successful completion of these courses could lead to an LSU STEM PATHWAYS JUMPSTART CERTIFICATION in Engineering, Coding, Digital Media, or Biomedical Engineering.
This year, the middle school STEM Classes will focus on coding. We will test several online coding platforms and explore programming languages such as JavaScript, Python, CoffeeScript, Scratch, Code Blocks, and others.
Each unit of study includes selections of different genres- including multimedia- all related to a relevant and meaningful Essential Question. As students read, they will engage in activities that inspire thoughtful discussion and debate with their peers allowing them to formulate, and defend, their own perspective.
These classes will operate on a total points system using the EBR Grading Scale. Students are often encouraged to redo assignments in order to get a higher grade. The EBR Grading Scale is:
93 - 100 A
85 - 92 B
75 - 84 C
67 - 74 D
00 - 66 F
All class assignments will be posted to the Google Classroom. Due dates are given for each assignment and students should submit work that is done well, done with purpose, and done on time. Classwork assignments will include, but are not be limited to, the following categories:
Bell Ringer (10 pts)
Code Block Tutorial (10 pts)
Classwork (10 pts)
Exit Ticket (10 pts)
Quiz (25 pts)
Test (100 pts)
Due dates are given for each assignment. Students that can not meet the due date for any given assignment should message me in the Google Classroom, by email, during office hours. My goal is to help, and I am here for my students. Please don't hesitate to contact me.
Students are asked to adhere to all classroom norms .
Doing well is no secret. Work hard. Ask questions. Respect others. Behave appropriately. Be prepared to learn in class.
Have a good work ethic.
Bring your materials to class each and every time.
Come to real and virtual class on time. If you are not in your seat (or on the google meet camera) before the tardy bell rings then you are late. If you are late, do not disrupt instruction.
Be polite! Take care of personal necessities before coming to class. Do not ask to leave the classroom unless is is a real personal emergency. (Finishing work for another teacher is not an emergency).
Put your cell phone on silent and put it away. (For virtual and for real classes).
Keep the classroom clean. Dispose of your trash at THE END of class. Do not throw rubbish on the floor.
EATING and DRINKING are not allowed in the classroom.
Do not touch/handle any tools or equipment without permission. Do not handle/touch any materials without permission. You don’t know which class this is for, or who it belongs to. If you damage any material or equipment, you will have to pay for its replacement.
Your students cannot succeed without your help at home. Help them with the responsibilities of middle school. They must get their work to school and to me on time. Look over their Google Classroom, and be aware of when assignments are due. Encourage them to come to us to ask questions BEFORE the due date on an assignment. They must continually work hard and as their grade will reflect their effort.
