You can even click on links in the table of contents to hide them when the site is published.
Inserting buttons that say "Back" or "Forward" or link to several options for students to explore (like those at right) or down below to link to some of my example Sites are helpful in navigation
You can add collapsible text to a Google Site. Click here to expand the text in order to see the ways I use this tool
I use this for a variety of purposes
Keeps a longer site cleaner and easier to navigate for students
Ask a question but hide a hint or correct answer
Hide directions so students have to purposefully click to get instruction
Strangely, the fact that students can't see instructions immediately seems to make them much more likely to read them carefully when they expand the text
Unfortunately for now you can only collapse text and can't hide images, videos, etc.
If you make a site, you can change the color of text blocks like this for emphasis
If you upload or insert photos from Drive, you can make a carousel that automatically plays the images or one that students click through.
I added captions to some of my photos here to show how you might use this feature to have students make observations or practice with content
You can double click on a Site you are building and get a little circle to pop up
If you click on the < > shown, you can embed a site by URL (first example below), or by embed code (second example below).
You can use the Insert menu that shows up on the right when you build a site to do this as well

If you click on the Drive icon shown, you can embed pretty much any type of file from Google Drive.
If you have a file saved on your computer that you want to use instead, click on the green cloud with an arrow and you can embed that.

Here are few things to try:
Check out my example sites below. There is a huge variety in terms of content and purpose.
Take advantage of Google's own Google Sites Help Page and Forum
Ask me a question or leave a comment via the form below (but please don't ask me how to do something without visiting the Google Sites Help Page or checking Sites Help Forums to see if it can be done first)
If you find this form useful and think you'd like to use something similar with students while teaching online, please feel free to steal my questions. Please don't just embed the same Form on your own webpage--student questions and comments will route back to me if you do that.
These sites have been built over the course of several years and most have seen revisions as more tools became available on Google Sites
Some of these sites use tools embedded from other services to which I subscribe, which means not everything you see may be readily available to you, but I still think they give a good overview of the possible applications of sites.
For example, anything with Kahoot Challenges embedded is probably not going to take you to the Challenge anymore--those links expire by a certain date (I think they can be set up for a month or longer, though) and the Challenges have to be re-assigned and then relinked
Also, I use all of these sites with students, so there may be forms or links that don't lead anywhere right now because I am still building the resource or because I've purposely broken the link while working on it or have closed a Google Form or presentation as the deadline for making up work passed.
