Tempo is time. In chess it is number of moves, which, when using a clock, costs time. You can make moves that will trap your opponent into having to take back moves or make moves he/she didn't intend to make. This causes your opponent to "Lose Tempo". Try to think ahead, and don't allow yourself to get trapped into losing tempo.

Avoid "stalemate", when king isn't in check, but ca't go anywhere, safely.
