Matt Weimann Bio
Matt Weimann grew up in Springfield, MA, the hometown of Dr. Seuss and birthplace of basketball. He attended public schools. Some extracurricular activities Matt participated in were playing trombone in jazz and marching bands, varsity wrestling, as well as many church groups and activities, including drama.
After graduating high school, Matt attended a small private college in the Valley Forge, PA. During his Junior year Matt was hired by College Pro Painters (CPP), a company that hires and trains hard-working and ambitious college students to run their own house painting franchises. When he nearly doubled the production goals CPP had set as reasonable for a pioneer turf, Matt was given the "Rookie of the Year" award.
Upon graduating college, Matt apprenticed with an interior custom painter/decorator in the West Chester, PA area. He learned how to wallpaper, produce many complicated specialty and faux finishes, and make the pickiest customers happy. Matt then started his own business, Excellent Painting, "a company committed to high-quality workmanship at an affordable price". Married in the year 2000, Matt and his wife Sonia, worked together for the first five years of their marriage. Sonia then went on to study biology at Cedar Crest College, bringing the couple to the Lehigh Valley. Shortly thereafter Matt enrolled in a Masters of Education program from DeSales University.
Matt has been teaching at Willow Lane since 2010. He began after school newspaper and chess clubs. His participation in a district technology committee was responsible for East Penn becoming a one to one district. He completed all but the capstone project for a second masters from Kutztown University. This one was geared toward technology. He has been part of a district-wide team that developed a computer science curriculum for elementary students.
With a love of creative writing, Matt began a blog, The Captain of Class. He provides personal thoughts on education and shares teaching ideas.
In 2011 Matt and Sonia's daughter Scarlet was born. Scarlet was born completely deaf, but was able to get cochlear implants when she was one year old. A lot of speech therapy has enabled Scarlet to learn to hear with the help of her implants, to the point that she is not only mainstreamed but plays the cello!
In order to help Scarlet have a positive attitude about her cochlear implants and circumvent difficulties that she will experience in school and life, Matt wrote and self-published a book that Scarlet helped illustrate. A digital copy of Scarlet's Superpower is available for free through Apple's iBook app. It can be purchased for $2.99 from Amazon, and the cost is only because that platform forces authors to charge at least that much.
During his free time Matt enjoys gardening, playing/learning chess, making things with his hands, hiking, boating, and traveling.
