The Seventh Most Important Thing by Shelley Pearsall
The Seventh Most Important Thing by Shelley Pearsall is a middle-grade novel about a troubled boy, Arthur, who is sentenced to community service with a junk collector, the "Junk Man," after committing a crime. He is given a shopping cart and a list of seven items to collect (glass bottles, foil, cardboard, wood, lightbulbs, coffee cans, mirrors) and discovers the Junk Man is a folk artist creating a massive, intricate sculpture from the "trash," leading Arthur to a story of redemption and finding value in unexpected places. The book is inspired by the work of folk artist James Hampton.
