The Essential 25
The Essential 25: Teaching the Vocabulary that Makes or Breaks Student Understanding identifies 25 words commonly found in standardized tests such as Keystone Exams and SATs. We can support our students with their standardized testing by making sure students know what is being asked of them when they see each of these words.
Ensure your student gets a good night sleep and a good breakfast prior to their exam.
Make sure your student is on time for the exam.
Encourage your student with positive thoughts and support.
Practice endurance reading with your student. Have them read for more than 10 minute intervals prior to the exam.
Pose a problem and see how many different ways your student can solve it.
Review basic math facts.
Encourage your student to ask questions in class prior to the exam.
Read through some of the Item Samplers with your student.
Practice breathing techniques with your student to help with test-anxiety and test-fatigue.
Plan a treat for when testing is complete.
