About Validation Sample Study
As a retention partner in EAST, your library will be participating in a validation study to help us calculate the likelihood that a book listed as available via your library catalog can be located and is in usable condition.
The data collection for this study will take place October 18 - December 15, 2017, and will involve confirming the presence and doing a quick condition assessment of 6,000 books in your collection. Your library will be compensated $4,000 from Mellon grant funds to provide a subsidy to help cover the cost of student and staff time to complete this study.
EAST will provide:
Training materials and webinars to describe the validation study in more detail (early October 2017)
Pre-selected list of 6,000 items to be checked, extracted from the data your library sent to SCS for analysis
Data collection tool containing items to be checked and method to record item status and condition
We ask each library to provide:
Student workers or other staff time sufficient to review 6,000 items over 8 weeks in mid-October through December 15th (estimated 150 hours total).
Tablet(s) or portable computer(s) with wifi plus bar code reader, capable of running a web browser (Chrome 5, Firefox 4.0 , IE 9, Safari 5 or higher) for data collection in the stacks (wifi need not be available in stacks). You will be provided access to the web based data collection tool after attending a webinar.
An overview message was sent to EAST voting members in late September 2017.
