The winner of the 2020 Holmes County Mock Caldecott Medal for best picture book is . . .

If I Built a School, written and illustrated by Chris Van Dusen. Students loved dreaming about how they would create a school while being inspired by Jack, the main character. Be sure to read reviews of this title submitted by Holmes County students.

A note from Chris Van Dusen, the author of If I Built a School:

"Thank you so much for letting me know that I won the Holmes County Mock Caldecott! That’s so exciting! In some ways, having my book selected by the kids themselves makes this even more rewarding than the real Caldecott."

The honor books are Max Attacks, written by Kathi Appelt and illustrated by Penelope Dullaghan, and Little Smokey written and illustrated by Robert Neubecker.

The Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC), a division of the American Library Association, announced the 2020 Caldecott Medal winner at the end of January. Visit the Caldecott Medal Homepage to learn more about the official Caldecott winners.

We were excited to see one of our contender titles, Bear Came Along, was selected as an honor title by ALSC. It came in eighth place by Holmes County readers.

A special thank you to all the book lovers of Holmes County that participated in our first Holmes County Mock Caldecott.
