In first grade, we use the balanced literacy approach which incorporates shared reading, guided reading, read-aloud, independent reading, and guided/independent writing. Students are working towards becoming fluent readers by reading literature from various genres and by reading in small groups. They self-select leveled books from classroom libraries for independent reading. Reading logs are kept to record all of our independent readings. To improve sentence structure, first graders study capitalization, punctuation, and grammar skills. In addition, students have weekly high-frequency words.
