Speech and language evaluations use a play-based approach to determine whether a child is demonstrating delays in speech or language development. The evaluation looks at all areas of communication, including receptive language (understanding), expressive language (use of language), speech sound production, pragmatic skills (social use of language), and play skills.
The evaluation is completed through a combination of parent report—you are your child’s best advocate—and direct interaction with your child. Following the evaluation, you will receive clear feedback about your child’s communication skills, recommendations regarding the need for ongoing speech therapy, and practical strategies you can begin using right away to support language development.
Ages: 0-5 years
Evidence shows that speech therapy for infants and toddlers is most effective when provided in the natural environment (home, daycare, or community) with the caregivers present and actively engaged in sessions. My goal is to use your toys, furniture, and whatever else you have around so that you know exactly how to replicate strategies using the materials you already have on hand.
Sessions are conducted through play, but with an emphasis on problem solving and coaching caregivers on how to facilitate language opportunities.
Frequency of sessions will be decided following the evaluation based on the child and family needs. Sessions are typically 45 minutes, but can vary depending on the child.
Identifying children who have developmental delays early is the best way to improve outcomes! If you are unsure whether or not your child would benefit from an evaluation, I offer free developmental screenings that can tell you whether or not a full evaluation is warranted.
