Prerequisite: Precalculus or Precalculus Pre-AP
Note: Graphing Calculator required
Calculus BC covers topics included in a two-semester college course. This is a college level course which adheres to the syllabus of the College Board Advanced Placement program. This course is designed for the student who has displayed both exceptional mathematical talent and diligence in the study of all high school mathematics courses. It prepares the college-bound student for possible advanced standing credit in calculus at the college level. Students enrolled in this course will be prepared for the AP Calculus BC exam in May and will receive a sub-score for the AB portion of the exam in addition to their BC score.
Students will cultivate their understanding of differential and integral calculus through engaging with real-world problems represented graphically, numerically, analytically, and verbally and using definitions and theorems to build arguments and justify conclusions as they explore concepts like change, limits, and the analysis of functions.
AP Calculus BC focuses on students’ understanding of calculus concepts and provides experience with methods and applications. Through the use of big ideas of calculus (e.g., modeling change, approximation and limits, and analysis of functions), the course becomes a cohesive whole, rather than a collection of unrelated topics. This course requires students to use definitions and theorems to build arguments and justify conclusions. The course features a multi-representational approach to calculus, with concepts, results, and problems expressed graphically, numerically, analytically, and verbally. Exploring connections among these representations builds understanding of how calculus applies limits to develop important ideas, definitions, formulas, and theorems. A sustained emphasis on clear communication of methods, reasoning, justifications, and conclusions is essential.
Notes, calendars, keys to homework problems, and electronic copies of the worksheets can be found in our Google Classroom. You will get a code for joining the Google Classroom in class.
Westlake High School utilizes the Google Classroom platform to share classroom resources, many assignments, and assessment preparation materials to students. Students will receive a classroom code to access these materials in class. My Google Classrooms are for students only. Due to circumstances beyond my control, I cannot give parents or tutors access to Google Classroom.
