Organic

Chemistry

Course Overview

Welcome to another fun filled year of chemistry with DeMo!!!

This class is equivalent to a college level sophomore organic chemistry course. The goal of this class is to expose students to same advanced topics that they will be required to learn in the actual college course, giving them an advantage in a class that is commonly known as one of the hardest undergraduate “weed-out” science courses. At a minimum we will cover the first nine chapters of the text, giving students an incredible base for any organic course they might encounter at any university. Organic chemistry is a required course for chemistry, biochemistry, biology, and pre-med majors. It can also be taken as an elective in many of the other science major areas.

This IS a college course. Unlike other classes you might have taken with me, I will be treating you just as if you were college students. You will have to take your own lecture notes just as if you were in a university classroom. You will be given suggested reading along with homework problems to work and check for accuracy. You will be quizzing on the completed homework problems regularly. Due to the expense of lab equipment and toxicity of many of the organic chemicals, we will only perform a few organic labs in which you will learn the very basic techniques required in any organic laboratory such as melting point determination, boiling point determination, distillation, extraction with solvents, synthesis, purification etc.
