Honors Chemistry

Course Overview

This course is designed to provide the student interested in enrolling in a college level class, either Chemistry AP at Westlake or later in college, with a strong background in chemical topics. The course will be taught at a rigorous pace, and the curriculum will cover the higher level topics of thermodynamics, equilibrium, kinetics, and electrochemistry. Knowledge of certain topics covered in physical science will be assumed, and if lacking, individual outside preparation will be necessary. The laboratory component of the course will be modeled after a college laboratory, and will emphasize the keeping of a digital laboratory notebook. Many of the labs will involve the use of technology in the collection of data. An Honors Chemistry student is expected to have completed geometry and be concurrently enrolled in Algebra II or higher.

Required Class Materials

We do not use a textbook, however as a resource, the textbook Glenco Chemistry, Matter and Change is available to be accessed on line. Hardcopies are available to be checked out from the teacher if desired.

Unit packets will be posted on Google Classroom. It is the student's responsibility to either print or download and annotate through Notability.

Specific classroom requirements and information can be found in the Syllabus.

Google Classroom

All assignments and classroom resources in chemistry are pushed out through the Google Classroom platform.  Students will receive a classroom code to access these materials, submit assignments, and track any missing work.

Additional Resources

If you are absent during a lecture, you will need to access the resource video of the lecture and fill in the notes in order to stay up-to-date with the material. The sooner you do this, the easier it will be to jump into the new material upon your return. Resource videos are customized to the class lectures, however there might be some slight differences as they were created a few years ago.
