Here is what we are working on in math this year! It's all subject to change so check here to see what we are doing! Please email me (mtaaffe@eanesisd.net) about any questions regarding content or homework!
Homework Policy: 4th graders are assigned 40 minutes of homework per night. For ELA, please read a book of your choice or working on spelling for 20 minutes. For Math, please complete 20 minutes worth of the assigned math worksheets. Math homework will be handed out on Tuesday and due the following Tuesday.
If a student misplaces their homework, it can be found in Google Classroom. The key is also posted in Google Classroom.
Week 8 (September 29 - October 3): This week the students will be learning about rounding, estimation, adding whole numbers, and subtracting whole numbers. They will be looping their concepts from the previous weeks while also expanding on their 3rd grade knowledge. The students will be able to round whole numbers to the nearest 10’s, 100’s, 1,000’s through the hundred thousands place. They will also be able to use their estimation skills to help them solve addition and subtraction problems. We are working on adding and subtracting whole numbers to prepare for adding and subtracting decimals.
Helpful terms to know: addend, difference, estimate, hundred thousands, hundreds, multi-digit, nearest, number line, place value, regrouping, rounding, solve, sum, tens, thousands, whole number
Week 7 (September 22-26) This week in math, we are going to be learning how to compare and order decimals. We will be combining our knowledge of comparing and ordering whole numbers with our knowledge about decimals to master this topic. As your student extends their knowledge of this concept throughout fourth grade, they will learn to compare and order decimals using concrete and visual models to the hundredths place. Models include base ten blocks, grid models, and number lines.
Helpful terms to know: Decimal, compare, order, greatest, least, place value, whole number, tenth, hundredth, greater than, less than, equal
Week 6 (September 15 - 19) - This week in math we are building on our knowledge of decimals. We are working on rational numbers on a number line and relating decimals to fractions. The students will use number lines to mark fractions and decimals accurately on a number line and look at a marked place on a number line and identify its decimal value to the nearest tenth or hundredth. They will also be relating decimals to fractions with a denominator of 10 or 100.
Helpful terms to know: decimal, tenths, hundredths, number line, interval place value, model, fraction, numerator, denominator
Week 5 (September 8 - 12) - This week, the students will begin learning about decimal place value. In fourth grade, we learn about the tenths and hundredths decimal place values. The students will demonstrate an understanding of place value up to one billion and decimals to the hundredths place using expanded notation, numerals, concrete models, visual models, and money. They will also continue to review Comparing and Ordering Numbers as well as Place Value Relationships. The students will be able to complete the expanded notation for decimals.
Helpful terms to know: model, expanded form, expanded notation, place value, tenth, hundredth, decimals
Week 4 (September 2 - 5) - This week the students will be expanding their knowledge on comparing and ordering numbers through the billions. They will continue to review their knowledge on place value through the billions and data. Homework is due on Tuesday 9/2. Students will receive new homework on Tuesday, September 2nd and it will be due September 9. If your student misplaces their homework it is posted in Google Classroom.
Helpful Terms To Know: compare, digit, equal to, greater than, less than, multi-digit, order, place value, represent, symbol, value, whole number
Week 3 (August 25 - 29) - Students will learn the values and composition of numbers up to 1 billion. They will also demonstrate an understanding of place value through expanded form and expanded notation.
Helpful Terms to Know: base ten, billions, compose, decompose, digit, expanded form, expanded notation, expressions, millions, multi-digit, numeral, place value, thousands, value, whole number, word form
Week 2 (August 18 - 22) - This week, we will be learning about Representing and Interpreting Data. In this unit, your student will build on their third grade knowledge by learning about frequency tables, dot plots, and stem-and-leaf plot. They will find different ways to represent data with birthdays and some of their favorite things. This Tuesday, August 19th, we will be taking our beginning of the year MAP test.
Helpful terms to know: data, frequency table, dot plot, stem-and-leaf plot
Week 1 (August 13 - 15) - Welcome back to school! This week we are going to be focused on getting to know your students. This week we are working on "Math About Me" and beginning our representing data topic. In "Math About Me" it allows students to discover how they see math in their daily life.
