In my elementary music classroom, students engage in a comprehensive, TEKS-aligned music education that nurtures musical skills, creativity, and a lifelong appreciation for the arts. Instruction incorporates the four strands of the TEKS: Foundations: Music Literacy, Creative Expression, Historical and Cultural Relevance, and Critical Evaluation and Response.
Through hands-on learning with recorders, ukuleles, keyboards, and various percussion instruments, students develop music reading skills, rhythmic accuracy, pitch recognition, and ensemble performance techniques. They explore creative expression through singing, composing, and improvising, while learning to perform both individually and collaboratively.
Students participate in musical performances that connect classroom learning to real-world application, fostering confidence, stage presence, and teamwork. Lessons integrate cultural and historical context, exposing students to diverse musical traditions and genres.
Above all, my goal is to instill the joy of making music—building a strong foundation in musical skills while encouraging curiosity, discipline, and self-expression that will serve them throughout their lives.
