Mikkel is a molecular paleo-ecologist (geneticist), which has a strong interest in archaeology and environmental science. He has over the past 15 years focused on how to use ancient environmental DNA as a proxy for uncovering past environments and their changes, extracted from past cultural sediments and other sources. As one of the forerunners for developing the recent shotgun metagenome approach, Mikkel has been involved in projects answering key questions about past human precense and ecological changes. More recently he has focussed on in-depth and detailed full genome analysis from species DNA found in sediments.
