Thomas investigates artefacts and archaeological materials for their identification, provenance and technology. He works on different inorganic materials using scientific methods from geoscience, metallurgy, engineering and material sciences. His research has a special focus on metals and artefacts from prehistory through to modern times from different parts of the world, investigating their origins, manufacture and role in society. Thomas currently works on non-ferrous metals (i.e. copper-alloys, tin, lead), precious metals (i.e. gold and silver), ferrous metals (i.e. iron and steel), ceramics, glass, industrial residues/materials (i.e. ores and slag) as well as pigments and residues found on artefacts.
