Sometimes the best part of creating art is sharing your artwork with others! Try using these sidewalk chalk paint recipes to create artwork or share a special message while working outside! These recipes are very easy to make and painting on the sidewalk or driveway is a lot of fun. The sidewalk chalk paint also washes off with the next rain.
The ingredients are very simple-you might even have everything at home already. I have found a couple of recipes, however the main ingredients are water, cornstarch, and food coloring. The other recipe I found uses baking soda in addition to the cornstarch, water, and food coloring. Here are some recipes that I researched and found online and tried:
1 cup water
1 cup cornstarch
Food coloring
Mix water and cornstarch together until there are no clumps. Pour mixture into containers and add food coloring.
⅓ cup baking soda
⅓ cup cornstarch
¾-1 cup water
Food coloring
Mix water with baking soda and cornstarch until there are no clumps.
Pour mixture into containers and add food coloring.
What should you mix your chalk paint in? Here are some great ideas!
I did not have the little bottles at home or a muffin tray to use so I mixed my sidewalk chalk paint in plastic yogurt and cottage cheese containers I had saved. I also mixed up some paint in an empty pop bottle and pressed a push-pin into the lid to create a hole. We applied paint to our driveway using large paint brushes because we painted some big images. But feel free to try different sizes!
You will want to wear old clothing-the food coloring will stain clothes! Maybe add the food coloring to your cornstarch/water mixture outside to prevent spills in the house.
You will notice that the color will dry much lighter. You could always use regular sidewalk chalk to enhance your painting! Also, you may only have red, yellow, blue and green in your food coloring set. Use this opportunity to practice mixing colors together
Or….. write a message of thanks to our Postal Workers, draw a message of Hope, write your favorite quote and draw a picture to go along with it, draw/paint a picture of what you are thankful for….Have fun with this!
Following the steps below, in the videos, you can eliminate the need to print out an image so that you can draw it. All you really need is a computer of device, a little knowledge of Google Drawing or Google Slide and a little attention to detail.
Using Google Drawing to set up a grid for your image/drawing. Go ahead and print it if you need to.
Gridding your paper to match up with your Google Drawing.
Now start drawing.... square by square... so that your proportions are correct.
This is a lesson that was recorded by a student when I taught in Estherville.
