Ethics Bowl is a national philosophy-focused competition designed to give undergraduate students experience tackling real-world ethical dilemmas within a team environment. WWU will participate in the Washington State intercollegiate Ethics Bowl, a regional branch of the national APPE competition. Embedded is an APPE video explaining the competition!
WWU's Ethics Bowl Club will consist of two to three teams. By being a part of the Ethics Bowl Club, you will also be a part of an Ethics Bowl Team which will be representing WWU in the Fall. You will work closely with your team over Fall Quarter to construct philosophical arguments based on a set of assigned "cases" which pose moral dilemmas. Your team has autonomy to take any stance- unlike debate. Meetings will be held for 1hr 50mins twice a week, days TBD, based on interest and availability.
Unlike many clubs, WWU Ethics Bowl Club will count as a Group-Led Independent Study Philosophy course- counting for 2 credits in the Fall. You do not need to be a philosophy major or have any philosophy experience to be a part of the Ethics Bowl, just an ability to think deeply about many things!
Supplemental philosophical texts will be read in addition to cases in order to provide everyone with a contextual basis.
Participating in Ethics Bowl is a great way to refine skills such as argumentation, public speaking, collaboration, and critical thinking. Additionally, it offers access to a tight-knit community of like-minded individuals and a space to delve deep into thought.
