  • Unit 1: Inside the Nightmare - August to September

    • In this unit, students will examine various literary and informational texts about why people enjoy being scared. They will also examine the elements of an explanatory essay and presentation in order to create these in the different performance tasks. Ultimately during all of the reading, writing, speaking & listening tasks, students will think about what draws people toward experiences that are frightening.

  • Unit 3: Extending Freedom's Reach - September to October

    • In this unit, students will explore the theme of power and freedom. Students will compose an informative essay about the power of the individual.

  • Unit 2: Outsiders and Outcasts - November to December

    • In this unit, students will explore literature and informational text revolving around the theme of outsiders and outcasts. Students will compose an argumentative essay based on The Metamorphosis and related video.

  • Unit 4: All That Glitters - January to February

    • In this unit, students will explore the theme of material possessions. Students will compose an informative essay about the effects of material possessions.

  • Unit 6: Blindness and Sight - March to April

    • In this unit, students will explore the theme of blindness and sight. Students will choose a topic of interest to them personally and use texts from class and their own research to create a research paper.

  • Unit 5: Virtue or Vengeance - April to May

    • In this unit, students will explore the theme of vengeance and forgiveness. Students will compose an argument about which is more valuable - vengeance or virtue.
