Science Units

The seventh and eighth grade curriculum utilizes Discovery Education. Below is the scope and sequence for the year:

Module 1: Earth in Motion

  • This module includes the core ideas of Earth’s interacting systems and plate tectonics. This module is taught through the lens of understanding the interactions of Earth’s systems, the transferring of matter and energy, as well as how these interactions affect the features of the Earth.

  • (Discovery Tech Book-Arizona 2019- 3.2 and 3.3)

  • Quarter 1: August - September

  • 7 Weeks

Module 2: Weather Patterns

  • This module includes the core ideas of weather patterns, and how weather is influenced by interactions involving sunlight, the ocean, the atmosphere, and landforms. This module emphasizes patterns and system/system models.

  • (Discovery Tech Book-Arizona 2019- 3.1)

  • Quarter 1-2: October

  • 4 Weeks

Module 3: Body Systems

  • This module includes the core idea of the body systems and how they interact. This module is taught through the lens of understanding that living things are organized into systems and subsystems to maintain homeostasis.

  • (Discovery Tech Book-Arizona 2019- 2.2)

  • Quarter 2: November - December

  • 6 Weeks

Module 4:Homeostasis

  • This module includes the core ideas of cells and cell structure. This module is taught through the lens of understanding that living things are organized into systems and subsystems, as well as the structure and function.

  • (Discovery Tech Book-Arizona 2019- 2.1 and 2.3)

  • Quarter 3: January - February

  • 5 Weeks

Module 5:Forces and Motion

  • This module includes the core ideas of Newton's laws of motion and freefall. This module is taught through the lens of understanding where motion can be described by frames of reference, net forces, and Newton's three laws of motion.

  • (Discovery Tech Book-Arizona 2019-1.1 and 1.2)

  • Quarter 3-4 February – April

  • 6 Weeks

Module 6: Magnetism and Electricity

  • This module includes the core ideas of magnets and the electricity-magnetism relationship. This module is taught through the lens of understanding where non-contact forces are invisible forces that can be attractive or repulsive and can vary in strength. (Discovery Tech Book-Arizona 2019-1.3 and 1.4)

  • Quarter 4: April - May

  • 6 Weeks
