Intermediate Dance

The following information will assist you in what to expect in this class. The main point to remember is that dance can be both fun, a good physical workout and fulfilling artistic experience.

At the intermediate level of dance you will be expected to take a more serious approach and appreciation for the art of dance. You will be evaluated as an individual and how well you progress from where you are at this point in your dance training. Your improvement rate will depend solely on what YOU put into the class. You should make every effort to attend class daily and dress out in proper attire. While in class be very observant and learn from watching others. Try to calculate why you or someone else looks good performing a particular movement combination, and apply that discovery to other movements.

Dance is a great way to exercise; it develops strength, flexibility, balance, rhythm, posture and coordination. You will develop long well toned muscles without bulk of tightness. Dance technique is designed not only to warm up the muscles of the body, but also to develop the mechanical and artistic elements required for more complex movement sequences. This means you should “perform” all movement combinations from the beginning of class to the end. You are DANCING throughout the entire period. Dance is an art form, which requires you to be alert, focused and disciplined in order to be successful in your expression and athleticism.

In dance you are an individual. You add your own body type, personality, and skill to the group. Your skill is what we will be working to improve the most, although dance can enhance many other aspects of yourself. Intermediate dance is designed to improve your dance technique, performance quality and introduce you to choreographic skills. You must understand that it takes more than one semester to achieve the required skills for the intermediate level; therefore you may continue to take the Intermediate Dance class for credit until you have been promoted to Advanced Dance.

Keep in mind that although you are working on establishing your personal technique, dance also requires for the class/ group to work collaboratively and as a cohesive unit. This makes performing as a class successful.

The units that we will cover this year are a deeper look into:

Ballet, Modern, Jazz, Tap, Hip Hop, Choreography, History, and Production
