DRESSING or CHANGING OUT: (AZ STANDS PES5-C1-PO1 & PES3-C1-PO1).

Dressing out is a major part of Physical Education and each student is required to do so every day unless told otherwise by the teacher. Each student can buy a P.E. uniform at the bookstore at any time. Students may purchase as many uniforms as desired. Students may also bring in something from home, but it must match the following criteria for students to receive dress out points. A student that chooses not to dress out for any reason only earns 5 points for participating and 0 points for dressing out. In case a student cannot participate or dress out due to a medical reason he/she must provide a doctor’s note. The Fitness Log form is utilized for students to make-up and earn points for excused absences. Please call your student’s absences into the DHS Office Attendance Line at 623-876-7506 in order to ensure absences are “excused” and your student has the opportunity to make-up missing work. Thank you!

Athletic shoes – Each student must have closed toe shoes that tie; not sandals or flip flops, etc. These shoes must be worn for the entire P.E. class.

Gray T-shirt or “Dysart” shirt – Each student must have a loose fitting shirt that is either gray or any shirt given by the Dysart district. (Athletic, Clubs, etc.) This shirt cannot be manipulated in any way and must fall in line with the Dysart dress code policy. There are no tank tops allowed to be worn during P.E.

Long, athletic shorts or sweat pants – Each student must wear either long athletic red shorts or sweat pants that are any color. These shorts or pants must fit the student appropriately and fall in line with the Dysart dress code policy.

Students are able to purchase a school issued uniform from the book store for $15.00. Class time will be allotted for distributing uniforms during the first week of school. Students may then go to the bookstore on their own time to purchase a uniform to change into each day.

Students have 7 minutes to dress out at the beginning and end of each class. Each student is responsible to bring their own uniform to change into each day.

The following scale is used for non-dressers and non-participation:

1st: Loss of points and PBIS Documentation.

2nd: Loss of points, Student/Teacher Conference, PBIS Documentation, Parent Contact.

3rd: Loss of points, Student/Teacher Conference, PBIS Documentation, Parent Contact.

4th: Loss of points, Student/Teacher Conference, PBIS Documentation, Parent Contact & Referral.

LOCKS AND LOCKERS:

The first week of the semester, each student will be issued their own lock and locker. This locker is for the student to put their P.E. uniform in as well we personal items such as deodorant and hair spray. During class, the student is expected to lock up their backpack and any other items in their locker at all times. The only person that knows the lock combination is the student and the teacher. The student should not give out their locker combination to anyone or share lockers with another student. All personal possessions are to be confined within the student locker. If a lock is lost the student will search the locker room for the missing lock during change out time and report the misplaced or lost lock to their teacher.

There is a Governing Board approved fee for usage of locks and lockers. There is a $5.00 fee per semester placed on any students’ account that is enrolled in a Physical Education, Physical Conditioning, or Lifetime Sports class for each semester. All yearlong Physical Conditioning, Lifetime Sports, Girls PE, and Boys PE students will have a $10.00 fee placed on their students’ account to paid at the Bookstore at any time during the school year.

FOOD AND DRINK IN THE LOCKER ROOM AND GYM:

With the exception of bottled water, there is NO food or drink allowed in the locker room or the gym. If a student is caught eating in the locker room, appropriate disciplinary action will follow. Proper care of water bottle is expected while in class and shout not include horseplay, throwing bottles, or any action resulting in spilled water bottles with themselves or classmates in PE.

INJURIES AND DOCTORS NOTE:

Report all injuries that happened during P.E. to the instructor immediately. Bring all doctors notes to your instructor at the beginning of class. Each note should list the students’ limitations and how long they are excused from participating in physical activity. An excused student will be given an alternative assignment to be completed to make up lost points and include verbal or written work to demonstrate understanding of concepts of the physical education activity missed as a result of the injury.

GRADING:

An important part of the student’s grade is dressing out and participating. If a student does not consistently dress out and participate he/she will not pass this class! (AZ STANDARDS PES5-C1-PO1 & PES3-C1-PO1).

Dysart Unified School District believes that grades should demonstrate what a student knows and is able to do; we developed guidelines for consistently and objectively reporting student academic achievement.

Make Up Policy:

Students have the ability to make up excused missed days of physical education class by completing a “Fitness Log.” Logs can be picked up from your teacher or teacher’s website and should include a minimum of 30 minutes of activity for each missed day with the time, date, description of activity and a parent/guardian’s signature. Make ups can only be completed from excused absences. Please see the “Late Work Policy” for the timeline in turning in your make up activity logs. Written assignments can be supplemented for extended injuries or other absences and students/parents are encouraged to contact your specific P.E. coach for those accommodations.

Late Work Policy:

Dysart High School students are expected to turn in all assignments including but not limited to homework, projects, papers, and lab reports on the assigned due date. Late work will be accepted for up to one week past the due date for up to 70% of the original grade. Students who turn in work past the 1-week deadline will be allowed to turn in the assignment until the district grading deadline (approximately every 4 weeks) for up to 50% of the original grade if the work meets requirements. All scores are based on the level of mastery demonstrated.

Retake Policy:

· Re-takes will be done in a timely manner to facilitate the continuity of student learning.

· Re-takes will need to be completed no later than each posting period (approximately every 4 weeks).

· In order to be eligible to retake students must provide evidence of further practice.

· In order to re-take at least 80% of homework/classwork assigned related to the assessment must be completed.

· The grade reflected in the grade book will be the best grade from all of the re-take attempts.

80% of the grade: Dressing out, participating in class and assessments: Students can earn a total of 10 points a day, 5 points for dressing out and 5 points for participation. Poor participation during any part of the class period will lower a student’s points for that day. Teacher discretion will be used. A student that chooses not to dress out for any reason will only earn 5 points for participating and 0 points for dressing out.

10% of grade: Classwork, Homework: Readings and writing assignments

10% of grade: Final Exam

Please note the following grading scale:

A = 100%-90%

B = 89-80%

C = 79%-70%

D = 69%-65%

F = 64%-0%

CELL PHONES:

Cell phones are not an instructional part of Physical Education classes and are to be stored in the student’s locker during class. Students who do not adhere to this exception understand consequences for the behavioral choice will result in losing class points and being referred to the PBIS behavior system of DHS. Securing possessions, including cell phones, ensures students belongings are safe.

Support and Academic Expectations

Dysart High School wants all students to graduate on time with their cohort. To ensure this happens students need to stay on track with their credits and pass all their classes. Dysart High School offers tutoring during the week on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. If your child is struggling in a class, we expect students to make the effort to get support through after school tutoring to supplement the supports we are giving in class.

Parent Communication

Dysart High School uses our Parent Portal, Messenger and Website as our main tools for parent communication. It is important to us that you receive timely updates about your student’s academic progress. If you do not have a parent portal account, please visit the Dysart.org site to create an account. We will communicate with you in a timely manner if your student is struggling in a class. Please provide your child’s teacher with your preferred method of contact so we can keep you updated on their progress.

If you have a question or concern about anything throughout the semester, please call or e-mail your child’s teacher.
