Unit of Study

Big Idea: Everything is made of Matter.

Unit Description:

Students should be able to explain that matter composes living and nonliving things and are made of particles too small to be seen. These particles are in constant motion and interact with each other.

Big Idea: Cause and Effect as related to earth and its ecosystems.

Unit Description:

Students will be able to explain the nature of biodiversity. Develop an argument as to why it is important to conserve biodiversity. Construct an explanation as to why increasing human populations pose a threat to global biodiversity. Categorize the human activities that harm Earth’s biodiversity. Identify and explain the types of human activities that can help to sustain biodiversity. Interpret information on the successful conservation of an endangered species.

Big Idea: What is biodiversity, how do humans affect it, and how does it affect humans?

Unit Description:

Explain the nature of biodiversity.

Big Idea: Earth and its interactions with the solar system.

Unit Description:

By the end of this lesson, students should be able to:

Describe the formation of our solar system. Describe the orbits of the planets in our solar system. Explain the relationship between a planet’s distance from the sun, the length of a year, and the duration of its orbit. Explain why the inner and outer planets have different sizes and compositions.
