SPANISH I is a foundation course which develops, through the communicative competence approach, the ability to comprehend simple speech and a beginning ability to speak, read, and write the language. The first objective is for learners to hear and then accurately reproduce the phonetic system with minimal interference from their own language. At the same time, students will learn vocabulary and practice grammatical patterns. In addition to learning the language itself, students will be introduced to culture and customs of the language.
