English I is a survey course that will introduce the DTHS
English Department’s Ten Essential Skills that will continue to become
more challenging throughout the English program. There is a specific
emphasis on identifying and evaluating the impact and effectiveness of
literary devices used in the various texts studied (drama, nonfiction,
poetry, short stories, novels and film). Scholars will annotate the
various texts studied for the purpose of making personal connections,
evaluating the effectiveness of literary devices identified, analyzing
passages, and making global connections. Annotating will be a
common practice to help improve reader comprehension and retention.
Scholars are also required to create a research paper, various types of
poetry, and an argumentative essay while applying the rules of
grammar and mechanics in order for scholars to develop their own
voice, confidence and style as a writer.
