Dear Sierra Verde Students and Parents,
I couldn’t be more excited to begin this school year with you! I know this is going to be an amazing year for all of us. As we enter into this year together, I wanted to take this chance to introduce myself.
My name is Christy Scofield and I am the 8th grade science teacher. I am extremely passionate about all things related to science and STEM and I adore learning about, and exploring new technology. This has prompted me to be a coach for several clubs here at SV including the Rubik’s Cube Club, and Lego Robotics teams. I love geeking out over cool stuff like drones, Sphero and Lego robotics, and Google cardboard. I run The Moxie Girls club, which is an after-school all-girls STEM/computer science club for our 6th-8th grade students. I also co-host a weekly podcast called "The Nailed It Wall," with the amazing Mr. Lane the STEM guy. We would love for you to check it out! I am also huge fan of Twitter and would be thrilled to have you follow me at @apositiveproton as I share many of the incredible things the kids will do this year in class.
Just to give you a little bit more information about me, I was raised in California where most of my huge family still resides. I taught preschool for 9 years before deciding to go into Elementary Education. I received my Bachelor’s Degree from California State University, Long Beach. Right after graduation, my husband’s job moved us to Atlanta, Georgia where we lived for seven years. From there we had the opportunity to move our family to Naperville, Illinois where we lived for two years. We absolutely loved our time in the south and in the Midwest but decided it was time to head closer to our family and warmer weather. We have been in Arizona for four years now where we have put down our forever roots. I have two incredible children, Ella, who will be going into her sophomore year of high school at Mountain Ridge, and Sam who is excited to be starting 7th grade.
I love to travel and have been lucky enough to visit several incredible destinations including Australia, Canada, several places in Europe, and 44 of the 50 states in the US. I also devoted my summer to completing an insanely long summer bucket list with my kids and had a blast ticking things off as we fully embraced the spirit of summer break!
I know this is going to be a truly amazing year of growth and discovery. I am committed to providing students with a year full of experiences that will illustrate how exciting and wonderful science really is. I want this to be a year you never forget and one that will inspire you to continue to explore, create and question the world around you. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me at christy.scofield@dvusd.org.
For the safety of all students at Sierra Verde, please do not send any peanuts, peanut butter or foods containing peanuts or peanut butter to be eaten as snacks in the classroom. It is fine to send these products for lunch, which is eaten in the cafeteria. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Nurse Tracey at (623)376-4810 or tracey.murray@dvusd.org.
